PUSH Project
Promote Urban Sanitation Hygiene (PUSH) Project looks at behavioural aspects of toilet use. The project, executed in Delhi and Agra, seeks to understand, explain and influence urban settlement dwellers' the usage of community toilet complex. Challenge A vast number of people practice open defecation in the urban cities even though they have access to community toilets. Lack of control, certainty and smell associated with community toilets are major drivers responsible for the mental model that community toilet usage leads to diseases. Approach We tested a number of interventions against each other in various communities. Provision of an emergency toilet helps to reduce uncertainty. A mug filled with antiseptic water along with regular bucket reduces visible and olfactory disgust. This intervention was prioritised by the community. There was a lottery to incentivize toilet trials which worked majorly for children. Complete details of the project can be found in the link provided below.
